As salaamu ^alaykum,

I would like to spend some time in explaining why ^Aqidah is
among the most important matters in the Religion. Imam Abu Hanifah,
radiallu ^anhu, said "I^lam annal-fiqha fid-din afdalu minal-fiqha
fil-ahkam," which means "Know that knowing the essentials of belief
has more priority that knowing the details of the rules of the
practice of the religion." This is indicated also in the book of
Allah ta^ala and in the sayings of the Prophet, sallallhu ^alayhi wa
sallam.

Allah said in Al-Qur'an "Fa^lam annahu la ilaha illallah, was-
taghfir lidhanbik," which means "Know firmly (that is, adhere to the
belief)  that no one is god  except Allah, and ask for forgiveness
for the believers." The verse signifies that the knowledge
concerning the belief has more importance over the rules of the
details of the religion.

This is why the Prophet, sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam, taught the
sahabahs the matters of the ^aqidah before teaching them the rules
of fiqh. As Al-Bukhariyy narrated from ^Abdullah ibnu ^Umar that he
said "Ta^allamnal-imana qablal-Qur'an," which means "We learned the
matters of the belief before learning Al-Qur'an."

Likewise another sahabah Jundub ibnu ^Abdullah said "Kunna ma^an-
Nabiyy, wa nahnu fityanun hazawiyah fata^allamnal-imana wa lam
nata^allamul-Qur'an, thumma ta^allamnal-Qur'ana fazdadna bihi
imana," which means "When we were young, we learned the matters of
belief before learning Al-Qur'an, and then we learned Al-Qur'an and
that increased the level of our belief." Narrated by Ibnu Majah.
Hence from that we know that the methodology of the Prophet is to
learn the matters of ^aqidah before learning the details of the
rules of the religion.
