So sorry to hear about ur back problems, its not easy when it deterioates your quality of life. Have you tried homepathic therapy and chiropractor as an alternative? 
I, too,work in the health care and I have my share of  elderly patients falling down, I usually let them fall down with the guidance of my hands and immediately call for any staff member who is within my line of sight. One thing i have noticed with patients when stepping in or out of the tubs, they tend to lean right on to you for support. I usually have their walkers/ chairs/canes nearby for them instead of having them to lean on me directly.
