Muhāmmad Yaqīn - Student of Islām

I have traveled many paths to find Islām

Hunger is my seasoning, fear is my garment, wool is my clothing, the light of the dawn is the heat in winter, the moon is my lantern, my legs are my beasts of burden, and the produce of the earth is my food and fruit. I retire for the night with nothing to my name and awake in the morning with nothing to my name. And there is no one on earth richer than me

Do not talk much without the mention of Allah, lest your hearts grow hard; for the hard heart is far from Allah, but you do not know. Do not examine the sins of people as though you were lords, but examine them, rather, as though you were servants. Men are of two kinds: the sick and the healthy. Be merciful of the sick and give thanks to Allah for the health

Strive for the sake of Allah and not for the sake of your bellies. Look at the birds coming and going. They neither reap nor plough, and Allah provides for them. If you say, 'Our bellies are larger than the bellies of birds,' then look at these cattle, wild or tame, as they come and go, neither reaping nor plowing, and Allah provides for them too. Beware of the excesses of the world, for the excesses of the world are an abomination in the eyes of Allah

The desert is the enviroment of revelation, genetically and physiologically alien, sensorily austere, esthetically abstract, historically inimical. . .

Its forms are bold and suggestive. The mind is beset by light and space, the kinesthetic novelty of aridity, high temperature, and wind. The desert sky is encircling, majestic, beautiful, terrible. In other habitats, the rim of sky above the horizontal is broken or obscured; here, together with the overhead portion, it is infinitely vaster than that of rolling countryside and forest lands. . .

In an unobstructed sky the clouds seem more massive, sometimes grandly reflecting the earth's curvature on their concave undersides. The angularity of the desert landforms imparts a monumental architecture to the clouds as well as the land. . .

To the desert go prophets and hermits; through desert go pilgrims and exiles. Here the leaders of great religions have sought the therapeutic and spiritual values of retreat, not to escape ... but find reality

The folds of Paradise are empty of the rich. It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter paradise

Eat barley bread and escape from the world in saftey and peace. The sweetness of this world is the bitterness of the world beyond, and the bitterness of this world is the sweetness of the world beyond. The true worshippers of Allah are not those who live in comfort. The most evil among you in act is the scholar who loves this world and prefers it to right conduct. Could he do so, he would have all the people act as he does

Woe unto you, slaves of this world. How your practices contradict your principles, and your whims your reason. Your words are a remedy which cures disease, but your actions are a disease that defies cure. You are not like the vine, which has fine leaves, tasty fruit, and is easy to reach, but are in truth like the acacia tree, which has few leaves, many thorns, and is difficult to reach. Woe unto you slaves of this world, you have placed good works beneath your feet, thinking that they can be attained by whoever so wishes, and have placed this world far above your heads thinking it cannot be reached. You are neither pious slaves nor worthy freemen. Woe unto you wage earners of sin, you take your wages and spoil the work. You shall meet with what you most fear, for the Taskmaster will soon see the work you have spoilt and the wages you have taken. Woe to you, debtors of evil. You begin with gifts before discharging your debt, you volunteer to perform what is superfluous but do not perform what you have been commanded to do. The owner of the debt will not accept gifts until his debt has been discharged

Seek not the world by destroying yourselves; Seek your salvation by abandoning what is in the world. Naked you came into the world and naked you shall depart. Do not seek what sustenance tomorrow may bring, but let each days sustenance suffice and tomorrow will bring its own concerns. Pray Allah to bring you sustenance each day

Leave people alone. Be at ease with people and ill at ease with yourself. Do not seek to earn their praises or merit their rebuke. Perform what has been commanded to you
