1 person was killed and 40 injured (5 critically) as indian troops fired on protesters protesting against the decision of the government to "sell" 800 kanal (=40 hectares) of FOREST land to shri amarnath shrine board (sasb).



the shrine board which manages the annual pilgrimage to the amarnath cave (sacred to hindus) wants to build lavatories on the land.



In retaliation to killing the protesters torched a military picket (NO 1 was even injured)



Situation is tense in the city and many fear that an armed revolt similar to the one started in 1989 may erupt again.
