Just curious to see how many of you would be interested in joining this...
Date: 18 Aug 2008, 8:30 pm / Mood: bored
Greetings, Comrades.
Some fellow Muxlims and I were thinking of starting a group about where we can learn about other sects/denominations/ideaologies of Islam and probably other Monotheistic religions.
We'd like to hear what Shias have to say about their beliefs from THEIR mouths. Same applies with Sufis, Salafis, Khawarjis, etc. Basically anyone who has taken the shahada.
We're interested in informing ourselves and educating ourselves on the beliefs of others from their perspectives to better understand them.
We'd really want members who are active and open minded and who have the ability to disagree respectfully. Most of all, we want people who like learning about other beliefs.
If you think you'd be interested then let me know. After a certain amount of people express interest, it will be made.
P.S.
This will be bumped up a few times throughout the week so that more people will see it.

Its funny seeing so many people interested in PATIENTlY and RESPECTFULLY learning about other sects of Islam yet we have peoblems with people being tolerant of others. I know what you're gonna say...It's not everyone Aya and I am aware of that. I just wanted to point that out in case someone was not being honest to themselves.
I am not pessimistic, I am just realistic.

Interesting. We need more serious discussions going on here. We lack them.

Yeah, exactly bay_muslimah. Me too. How I wish Kidman was still here. He always took part in the Question/Answer forums relating to Shaism. Similarly, another member, AbuBakr, was happy to respond to any concerns regarding Sufism. Inshallah we will find similar members, or better, around. =]

As Meggie already pointed out, the whole and only goal of this is to learn about other sections within Islam, discuss it in a polite manner [only what we have knowledge on], and increase our knowledge. Absolutely nothing else, at all.
Also as we already said, only those whom are open-minded would join. Sensitive members have no place in a Group looking to learn about facts, be it bitter or not. Again, this is not a Group for random members. It's clear.
Noor_Islam:
Indeed sister. There have been questions posted on blogs/forums/polls, guestbooks, regarding other sections. All littered out across the site. Usually accompanied with answers from those who hate the particular section in question, which generally leads to pointless arguments and debates. Hence one of the reasons in creating the Group is to have an organized place for such questions. Instead of finding a "Sunni" responding to a question concerning "Shia's" as we typically come across, it would be a Shia themselves giving you the answer. Same case with a question on a topic relating to Sufism, and other sects. Then it's your sole responsibility to attempt to verify what has been said, by tracing it to the said sources, if possible.

That's why we will make sure nothing is said without including the appropraite evidence, and which materials it can be proven from. It would be difficult to hide anything, with a group of intelligent and informed members around. They would easily expose it.

Exactly, and true Akhee. Hence why we [Meggie/Moin] didn't just go ahead and create the group, then invite the members. And hope for the best. I have been here for a while, like you, and I have always questioned the purpose behind the Group section. No, not at all. Some of the reasons behind this blog is to see which members are interested first. Are they regulars? Are they known to contribute in some ways or another? Random people won't be invited. It defeats the entire purpose of this blog. And that's just one of many reasons why the Groups have been a miserable failure.
It's been nearly a week since the idea resurfaced. And yet we have not created anything. We are taking our time, and as soon as we figure out a realistic method in keeping this Group active and updated regularly, we would go ahead and create it. As of now, nothing will be taking place. This blog is the first step. Next step is to see what factors contribute to a active and popular Group, what the members would/wouldn't like to see, keep the members interested, avoiding potential heated arguments, and what reasons lead to failure. After that, we would look to see ways in making the Group visible to all. We all know the Group section appears to reside in the dark corners of MS. If can we get enough members, and the Group is heading for potential success, then maybe ask the admin to include the Group on the homepage. Once all that is done, I guess we will go ahead. Yes, it will take a bit of time, but would be well worth it in the end Inshallah. Hard work usually pays off.
Siratalmustaqeem:
The Group name is the last idea we will think about. There are many Groups with the most beautiful and awesome names, yet clearly that didn't appear to have any impact on it's activities.

most of my friends that are shia, i just totally avoid the topic and talk about islam in general terms. Same with my suffi friends. I try to discuss differences but some people are sensitive so I just nod my head when they say something i dont agree with and change the subject.
if they ask me directly I tell how it is, most ppl are extra sensitive bout this stuff and as much as I love all my muslim brothers and sisters sometimes we can lack tact and say rude things. This room may cause fitnah unless you have a fair mod.
IE) a shia person may say something bout Aisha or Abu bakar or Umar ibn khatab and for a sunni person this is unacceptable and is actually a punishable crime. Of course we hold Ali ibn abi talib in the same esteem
