A Rant on Censorship

Date: 21 Jul 2008, 7:03 pm / Mood: annoyed

Oh I love the irony of it all.

Isn't it funny how so many muslims on here love to fuss about how they are silenced by the West? How they love to ramble on and moan about how the 'oppresive kaffir dictatorship of Amerikkka" totally disregards their interests and arguements and labels us as primitive oppressive imbeciles?

Well I'm sure most of you will say " Of course it isn't funny. It's a serious issue!"

Ok then. So why do we censor ourselves and why do we censor others? Some of you may be confused.

For example there might be a blog labeled a debate. Let's use one of the most common examples: Salafi vs. Sufi. Before you jump at me and rip my lungs out, I want you to know this is just an example. I don't label myself Salafi or Sufi.

The blog maker is probably a Salafi and is making very valid points. The vast majority of the comments are in favor of the Salafi. A couple of Sufis or neutral people may make several posts but be mocked by the blog creator. He is in full control of the situation.

But wait! A very informed and educated Sufi comes along and one by one, slams down the Salafi's points. He pulls out hadiths to back himself up and uses ayats in his favor. Even some of the people who were in favor of the Salafi's point of view are starting to second guess themselves.

The Salafi gets nervous. The Sufi dude obviously knows what he's doing and is starting to make him look like an idiot. When the Salafi makes a post, the Sufi guy counters it. Are either of them right or wrong? Not necessarily (( this is just an example)).

So what does the blog creator do? He deletes all comments made by the Sufi guy. Everything that was said was erased. It no longer exists. But the Sufi guy is obviously VERY upset with this. He expresses his frustration and says that he doesn't appreciate being censored for winning a debate. The Salafi mocks him and says that he should stop spamming his blog. The other spectators may notice that hey... The number of comments suddenly went from 75 to 43. They may say something about it but be deleted as well.

Censorship. We love to fuss when it happens to us. But we love to use it against other people who's beliefs and ideas are different than ours.

Hypocritical, much?

She didn't get the idea behind the blog.  She's defending Salafiyyah.  Apparently, she just read the Salafi vs. Sufi portion of it.

seems like the metaphorical dude likes to get down with his fascist side, and is a hypocrite, censorship in some instances is ok but just to be a bully, is pathetic

W0LFE_THA_LOC (21 Jul 2008, 10:43 am):

meggie (21 Jul 2008, 10:19 am):
I think it'd be excellent to get rid of the delete option when it comes to blogs. If someone makes a truly offensive comment (( and someone disagreeing does NOT count)) then report it.

I also agree it's strange that someone would make a debate in the form of a blog. It seems more appropriate for the forum section.
