Curiosity is Alive

Date: 27 Mar 2008, 11:19 am / Mood: pensive

Science is Dead--> Worrisome Clouds on the horizon-->place your ears down to earth--> Brain storm-->flood of ideas--> seeds of hope--> sprouting thoughts--> structures in full bloom--> community cross-pollination--> urban gardens of change--> Nurture the children--> Curiosity, the predecessor and now offspring of science, is reborn.

I've finally compiled a list of ideas from a brainstorming session of the first meeting, basically asking the brothers to think of as many possibilities of what they could do with their lives, how they could live, what they would like the community to be like etc. No idea was too stupid(or too funny) to be mentioned;

 in no particular order:

Move to Guyana

Move to Curitiba, Brazil

Build an agrarian "Islamic-friendly" (i.e. non-Muslims allowed but adherence to sharia as much as possible)commune in the boondocks(Beware the FBI)

Brand new subdivision development from the ground up.

Vegetable Gardens and Small animal farming(goats, chickens) in the city.

Islamic Community Center

Mentoring program for youth

Moving to an area with a Muslim community

Neighbor crop (specifically potato, thats what the brother wrote! He really likes potatos!) sharing programs

affordable housing complex for built and owned by Muslims and for Muslims and non-Muslims to live in

Teach Islamic courses in current public schools

Affordable housing project for Muslims

A master plan housing project for muslims with many amenities

An Islamic school where I can live nearby

My family moves to XY complex, and so does my buddy's family. slowly, his friend comes . . .

The local community builds/buys livable residential units BEFORE building a full-scale masjed

Buy land upstate, build there

green mall

hasidic jews(I think this means like the hasidic jew type communities you can see in new york?)

amish (ditto)

Start with a portion of the comprehensive plan

think about the greatest need for our Muslim community

Mormons

Require dues(somewhat high) to be part of a community. The rent and amenities will be low. These dues pay  salaries of community employees, thereby satisfying the potential for employment

Muslim moon colony(How will we decide the begining of Ramadan???)

Land owned in trust in order to preserve community indefintely, masjed alwasy maintained, etc.

Organize a group of individuals/families to pool resources and purchase an aprtment building, then dedicate one floor to be a masjed or a soup kitchen or a dawah center, etc.

The brainstorm was conducted by having the brothers write down all their ideas on post it notes(1 idea per note) in a three minute period.

Feel Free to add your own ideas  HERE, Remember they do not have to be practical or even sane, they are still welcome !

I definitely agree with blue_lotus, the development of children in a proper and healthy way, needs to be a main purpose of the community, else it wont survive, it would be great if you could suggest some practical ideas as well, anything at all, We want an islamic school, but there are many other needs as well . . .

Well on the subject of developing communities Akhi I would just like to put forward a thought, a suggestion based on what I have witnessed occur amongst Muslims around me. Even though many practise, or do so to varying degree's there still may be a severe lack of serious Tarbiyah amonsgt people.  Added to this are the complicated issues that many do not want to look at, i.e problems from the past that effect the present.

This invariably effects how individuals are in all significant relationships in their lives, how they are as parents etc..  I have been witness to a lot of the instability that can occur from this- and the problems just repeat themselves in the next generation.  what happens is that you are always  "dealing" with stuff rather than moving forward as a community.  I know that what ever happens is the Qadr of Allah, but it is essential to learn from experience. So if you are looking at development of communities pls take into account bringing forth some type of therapeutic modality that can help work with people and their "issues" (for want of a better word. )
