However, if it is applied in the Sharأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢ (Divine Legislation), then what is intended by it is that which the Prophet has Amara bi-hi (commanded) and Nahaa an-hu (prohibited) and Nadaba ilai-hi (encouraged), whether by Qawl (speech) or Fiأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢l (action), not including that which is from the pronounced text (i.e. the actual verses) of al-Kitaab al-أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Azeez (Qurأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢an). For this reason it is said, concerning the evidences of the Divine Legislation: أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“al-Kitaab was-Sunnahأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢ أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â‚¬إ“meaning, أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“al-Qurأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢an and al-Hadeeth أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢.[Taken from the book: أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“An-Nihaayah fee Ghareeb al-Hadeeth wal-Athar أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“ أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â‚¬إ“ by al-Imaam Ibn al-Atheer 2/409]. From this definition, we can derive three (3) meanings for the word أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Sunnahأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢ :at-Tareeqat/as-Seerah, meaning the Way/Life of the Prophet, The sayings and actions [and approvals] of the Prophet,Commands, prohibitions, etc. which are not Qurأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢anic verses. Other meanings applied to the word أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Sunnahأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢ according to the Islamic Scholars: Sunnah is the opposite to Wajib / Fard, i.e. that which is not obligatory, [as used by the scholars of Jurisprudence], Sunnah is the opposite of Bidأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢ah (innovation), i.e. that which is founded in the divine legislation. Sunnah as defined by the scholars of Hadeeth: أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Whatever has been reported from or about the Prophet, including his speech, actions and approvals (of what was done in his presence, or he came to know about it), in addition to his physical characteristics, moral character and his life history before and after the Prophethood.أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢ According to some scholars, this definition of أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Sunnahأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢ makes it synonymous to أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Hadeethأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢. Sunnah also refers to the Creed (أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Aqeedah) as in the titles of many books of Islamic Creed, such as أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Usool as-Sunnahأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢ (أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Fundamentals of the Sunnahأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢) [Imaam Ahmad] , أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Sharh as-Sunnah أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢ (أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Explanation of the Sunnahأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢) [Imaam al-Barbahaaree], etc. Definition of al-Iأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢tiqaad Linguistically, the word Iأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢tiqaad is on the Arabic linguistic pattern of Iftiأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢aal from the word أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Aqd, which means ar-Rabt (tying, binding) and ash-Shadd (tightening). Technically, it is Hukmu adh-Dhihni al-Jaazimu (that which the mind has determined with certainty). If someone says: أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Iأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢taqadtu Kadhaaأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢ , he means: I am certain about it in my heart. Hence, it is that which the mind/heart is sure about. If that matter [which oneأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢s mind/heart is certain about] is in accord with reality, then it is Saheeh (correct), while if it contradicts reality, then it is Faasid (false). Hence, our belief that Allah is Ilaahun Waahidun (the One God that deserves to be worshipped) is Saheeh (correct), while the belief of the Christians that Allah is three (3) [Trinity] is Baatil (false), since it contradicts reality. The way in which this meaning is connected to the linguistic meaning is obvious, since that matter - about which he has made a determination in his heart أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â‚¬إ“ is as though he has tied his heart to it and tightened it in such a way that he can not free himself from it. [Taken the Noble Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-Uthaimeenأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢s Explanation of al-أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Aqeedah al-Waasitiyyah, vol. 1, pg. 50] This is similar to the definition of أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Aqeedah. Linguistically, the word أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“aqeedah means: أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“to knot, bind, fasten tightly, fortify, consolidate and cement.أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢ Technically, it means: أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“a firm, unwavering belief or conviction - which is not open to any doubt - in the mind and heart of the one who holds this conviction.أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢ Therefore, the Islamic أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Iأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢tiqaadأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢ / أƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ‹إ“Aqeedahأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢ (Creed) refers to that which the heart and mind is certain about, i.e. Imaan in the following: Allah, the Most High, and what is due to Him of the Tawheed in oneأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢s belief, worship and obedience to Him, His Angels, His Scriptures, His Messengers, The Last Day, The Divine Decree (Qadr and Qadaaأƒآ¢أ¢â€ڑآ¬أ¢â€‍آ¢): accepting its good and its evil. Additionally, one must belief in whatever is confirmed from the remaining matters of the Unseen and reports concerning the previous nations and future events.
