Soon after I was born, I was taken away from my Mother and was sent to a bedouin tribe in the Desert, so that I could gain strength in the unpolluted air of the Desert, I was nursed by my Foster mother, and later when I was five I was sent back to my Family in Makkah. With my strength I became an excellent wrestler and at one point, I had wrestled Umer ibn Al Khattab, and broke his leg, but we remained friends after this incident.
As I already said; and will reiterate, I am from Bani Makhzum. My tribe, Bani Makhzum was responsible for matters of war. My clan bred and trained the horses on which the Quraish rode to war; it made arrangements for the preparation and provisioning of expeditions; and frequently it provided the officers to lead Quraish groups into battle. As a Makhzumi I had a great responcibilty to master all weapons (The spear, the lance, the bow and the sword.), and be able to ride all Horses and, sometimes they would give me young untamed horses for me to tame! My tribe had the best of horsemen and I was among the best of the best, I could even ride a Camel as well as a horse.
I grew big an tall, over six feet, and was among a large family, I had six brothers, and I myself had seven children, The sons were Khalid, Waleed (named after the father), Hisham, Ammarah and Abdu Shams. The daughters were Faktah and Fatimah. I was very wealthy and did not need a job, thus I could learn much, but the Qurysh wanted all people to participate for Makkah, so I hired employees, but in my spare time, I was a blacksmith and a butcher.
Islam comes...
When Islam first came, and the first revelation was given to our Nabi Muhammad, sallahu aleyhi wa salam, I was twenty four years old. Three years later he began to preach publicly about this new religion, I was not so keen on this way of life so I began to get angry and said,
"Is the prophethood to be bestowed on Muhammad," I exploded, "while I, the greatest of the Quraish and their elder, am to get nothing? And there is Abu Masud, the chief of the Saqeef. Surely he and I are the greatest of the two towns." [Ibn Hisham: Vol. 1, p. 361.Quran 95:1-5]
I would soon regret such words...
Uhud before Islam
Uhud was a fierce response to what happened in the battle of Badr,
The Battle of Badr was the first major clash between the Muslims and their enemies. A small force of 313 Muslims had stood like a rock against the onslaught of 1,000 Non-Muslims After an hour or two of severe fighting the Muslims had shattered the Quraish army, and the Quraish had fled in disorder from the battlefield. The finest of the Quraish had fallen in battle or been taken prisoner.
A total of 70 Non-Muslims had been killed and another 70 captured by the Muslims, at a cost of only 14 Muslim dead. Among those killed were 17 members of the Bani Makhzum, most of them either cousins or nephews of Khalid. Abu Jahl had been killed. Khalid's brother, Waleed, had been taken prisoner.
Two days later Abu Sufyan held a conference of all the leaders of the Quraish....
"And I have lost my son, Handhalah." said Abu Sufyan. "My thirst for revenge is no less than yours. I shall be the first to prepare and launch a powerful expedition against Muhammad." [Waqidi: Maghazi, pp. 156-7]
Thus this started the next battle, It was the morning of Saturday, March 22, 625 (the 7th of Shawwal, 3 Hijri)-exactly a year and a week after Badr. This would be my frist encounter with Muhammad, sallahu aleyhi wa salam.
Preparations were made in revenge,
Jubair bin Mut'im, spoke to his slave, who was known as the Savage-Wahshi bin Harb. "If you kill Hamza, the uncle of Muhammad, in revenge for the killing of my uncle at Badr, I shall free you." Sure enough this savage killed Hamza Radi Allahu anhu with his javelin
The prophet, sallahu aleyhi wa salam, was actually winning this battle, even though once again he was outnumbered, he broke the ranks of our army and began to attack our camp, but when a group that he called the munafiqeen saw this, they could not help but rush to join him, these were the archers who were based on a hill to keep me and Abu Sufyan from attacking from the rear. They were ordered not to, but many of these archers left, and only eight remained, I saw my opportunity and me and Abu Sufyan and the rest of our calvary attacked from behind, and the rest of our forces abandoned their retreat an we surrounded the Muslims, here is what it looked like,
After such disorder among the ranks of the Muslims, a few of our Utbah bin Abi Waqqas, Abdullah bin Shahab and Ibn Qamiah. all began to hurl stones at the Prophet.
The first (a brother of Sad) landed four stones on the Prophet's face, broke two of the Prophet's lower teeth and cut his lower lip. Abdullah managed to land one stone which gashed the Prophet's forehead, while Ibn Qamiah with one stone cut the Prophet's cheek and drove two links of the Prophet's chain helmet into his cheek bone.
The Prophet fell to the ground as a result of these blows and was helped up by Talha. At this moment the few Muslims left with the Prophet counter-attacked fiercely and drove the Quraish back. Sad dropped his bow, drew his sword and rushed at his brother; but the latter outran him and took shelter in the Quraish ranks. Sad was later to say that he had never wanted to kill a man so badly as he wanted to kill his brother, Utbah, for wounding the Prophet.
There was again a little respite in which the Prophet wiped the blood from his face. As he did so he said, "How can a people prosper who color the face of their Prophet with blood, while he calls them to their Lord!" Abu Ubaidah, who was a bit of a surgeon, tried to pull out the two links which had dug into the Prophet's cheek bone. Finally he had to use his teeth to pull them out, and in the process lost two of his teeth. He later became known among the Arabs as Al Asram, i.e. the one without the incisors.
My conversion
After The Truce of Hudaibiya was signed in early April 628, the prophet, sallahu aleyhi wa salam, came to Makkah to perform Umrah, he had with him 1400 armed Muslims, I was dispatched with 300 soldiers to intercept them. There were a few skirmishes with no casualties then we realized that they were truthful and only wanted to make Umrah, and an agreement was made, we left Makkah for three days and the Muslims made Umrah, this is when I made my decision. I said to Ikramah one night,
"It is evident to the intelligent mind that Muhammad is neither a poet nor a sorcerer, as the Quraish allege. His message is truly divine. It is incumbent on all sensible men to follow him."
Ikramah was surprised but was not angry, but when Abu Sufyan found out he was furious with me and threatened me and Ikramah defended me saying,
"Your anger may well lead me also to join Muhammad. Khalid is free to follow whatever religion he chooses." [Waqidi: Maghazi, p. 321.]
That night I took my armor, and weapons and horse, and set out for Madinah. On the way I met two others traveling in the same direction: Amr bin Al Aas and Uthman bin Talha and there was mutual astonishment when we found that each was traveling to Madinah with the same purpose, for each of us had regarded the other two as bitter enemies of Islam! The three seekers arrived at Madinah on May 31, 629 (the 1st of Safar, 8 Hijri), and went to the house of the Prophet. I entered first and made my submission. He was followed by Amr and then Uthman. we were warmly welcomed by the Prophet, sallahu aleyhi wa salam. I even met Umer ibn al khattab and we became good friends again. I was 42.
Later life/Death
I would later fight many battles Fee sabililah! Like the conquest of Makkah, The Battle of Hunain, the battle at Ta'if... Then the prophet, sallahu aleyhi wa salam died, and we had a new problem, it was called the campaign of apostasy, I was under command of Abu Bakr, I helped against the people who prevented Zakat, and Alhemdililah, we saw an end to this apostasy. I helped in the invasions of Iraq, all the way to the caliphate of Umer then Umer
Before my expedition to Marash, I had a special bath. He had with him a certain substance prepared with an alcoholic mixture, which was supposed to have a soothing effect on the body when applied externally. When Umer heard of thus he was furious! Umer later dismissed me from the military for this, and Umer said,
"I have not dismissed Khalid because of my anger or because of any dishonesty on his part, but because people glorified him and were misled. I feared that people would rely on him. I want them to know that it is Allah who does all things; and there should be no mischief in the land."
I was confused later on, as i pondered why I had not received martyrdom, when had begged for it in hundreds of times, when my friends said to me,
"You must understand, O Khalid," the friend explained, "that when the Messenger of Allah, on whom be the blessings of Allah and peace, named you Sword of Allah, he predetermined that you would not fall in battle. If you had been killed by an unbeliever it would have meant that Allah's sword had been broken by an enemy of Allah; and that could never be."
and on my death bed I said,
"I die even as a camel dies. I die in bed, in shame. The eyes of cowards do not close even in sleep." [Ibn Qutaibah: p. 267.]

"You were better than a million people,
When the faces of men were downcast.
Brave? You were braver than the tiger,
Damr bin Jahm, father of Ashbal.
Generous? You were more generous than
The unstoppable deluge flowing between mountains."
[Lubabah the Younger, mother of Khalid, eulogising him]
"Have women ever stopped mourning for anyone like Khalid?"
[Umar bin Al-Khattab]
"Women will no longer be able to give birth to the likes of Khalid bin Al-Waleed."
[Abu Bakr]
