Salaam alaikum wa rahmatullah…

First of all let me say that is IS very important to learn to recite quran in the language it was revealed. Words get lost in translation and there are many barakaah in reciting quran in Arabic. Secondly, the seal of the prophets, Allah’s Messenger (salaallahu alaihi wasalaam) was an Arab so it’s only natural that the precedent and standard of appropriate muslim women’s dress was set by his wives (the mothers of the believers) and the female companions (sahabiyaat) (May Allah be pleased with them). The companions didn’t question revelation or try to intellectualize and justify reasons for not following it, which is why when the verses about hijab were revealed the women tore their garments and covered themselves up.

A muslimah’s attire should be modest, NOT form-fitting, and should not draw attention to oneself. The khimar must cover the bosom, and the neck should NOT be showing…I also like to be stylish, but modesty is the main emphasis in my dress as it should be for ALL muslimah’s as it has been legislated by Allah. However, my bag and shoes almost ALWAYS match whatever color khimar I wear—this is my expression of individuality if you will. In our endeavor to, first in foremost, obey our Lord and dress according to what was legislated in His book and the example of women of the sahaaba (the first hijabi’s), we should remember that a certain dress was legislated as protection and a shield for the women, an outward display of modesty—the Prophet (salaallahu alaihi waslaam) even called women, whose scent (perfume) could be smelled by others, fornicators. Being covered properly is also a requirement for offering the salaah, even in the privacy of our homes.

It’s really not about Arab culture or the semantics of whether one wants to use the word khimar or not, because it’s not from your native vernacular--and definitely NOT about US. This religion is not based on the desires and opinions of the slaves of Allah but about TOTAL submission to Him and what He and His Rasool have made lawful or unlawful for us and abiding and living by that.   P.S. I do not judge my sisters in islaam who do NOT cover or who adorn themselves differently from what I understand (according to quran and sunnah) to be proper attire for the muslim woman. It is however, my obligation to remind MYSELF first and my akhawaat about what Allah and His Messenger (salaallahu alaihi wasalaam) have instructed.   Any judgement is with Allah. And I pray that Allah keep us ALL on the siraatal mustaqeem….ameen!

4:115. And whoever contradicts and opposes the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) after the right path has been shown clearly to him, and follows other than the believers' way. We shall keep him in the path he has chosen, and burn him in Hell - what an evil destination

24:31. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent. and to draw their veils all over Juyubihinna and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husband's sons, their brothers or their brother's sons, or their sister's sons, or their (Muslim) women (i.e. their sisters in Islâm), or the (female) slaves whom their right hands possess, or old male servants who lack vigour, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And all of you beg Allâh to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful.

The Messenger said (salaallahu alaihi wasalaam): “And the worst of your women are the ones who commit Tabarruj, who strut around in arrogance…” (Reported by al Bayhaqee and suthenticated by al albaanee in his saheehah)

The Messenger said to Asmaa bint Abu Bakr: “Oh Asmaa indeed when a woman reaches the age of puberty it is not allowed that any of her be seen except this and this.” And he pointed to his face and hands. (Abu Dawud)
